Spencer & Wedekind are a West London-based Interior Architecture studio and design team, led by husband-and-wife duo, Nick and Sophie.
Below, we showcase some striking before-and-after images of one of their many successful projects — a home bought and sold through us at Horton and Garton.
Spencer & Wedekind Experience
Having lived and worked in Hammersmith for over 10 years, Nick and Sophie have helped many families and homeowners transform their properties into dream homes.
Whether you need help with a full house project, or just a kitchen or bathroom – we can advise with design ideas or help implement the works and manage the project for you. Big or small, every project matters, and we’re here to explore them together.
Before and After: A Transformation Story
Nick and Sophie’s concept was to create an Anglo-Mediterranean-type lifestyle, where living spaces revolved around a central garden. The design balanced modern aesthetics with traditional values—incorporating sprayed aluminium, stained wood, honed marble, decorative plaster, and wall panelling, all accentuated by antique brass and bronze fixtures.
After securing planning approvals, they extended the house upwards into the loft and added a pod conversion on the rear first floor. Additionally, they expanded the ground level into what was once a rundown garage—adding 600 sq/ft to this end-of-terrace home.
The sliding aluminium doors open on three sides of the garden allowing a free-flowing lifestyle of inside-meets-out – and giving full view from every angle of the entire ground floor, from front living room to rear kitchen.
Design Process
Below, we delve deeper into their design process and present a selection of striking before-and-after images, highlighting the remarkable transformation of this project.
How did lifestyle influence the final layout and design choices?
Lifestyle heavily influences all our layout decisions, with clients usually deeply involved. However, without a specific client for this project, we designed for broad appeal, prioritising functionality and a universally appealing style and colour palette. Our original concept – living around a garden or courtyard – felt like a natural fit for this house from the start. It was always destined to take shape.

What were the most significant structural changes?
Three major structural changes defined this project:
- Opening all three sections of the ground floor to create a seamless connection with the central garden.
- Extending the ground floor into the adjoining garage, transforming it into a much wider living area.
- Adding an entire new floor in the loft, converting it into a spacious master suite.
What were the biggest challenges, and how did you overcome them?
Adhering to the strict demands of the council and the conservation officers. We finally reached a resolution through multiple design tweaks.
What advice would you give to homeowners considering a similar transformation?
Integrating a central outdoor space within a home offers a beautiful way to blend nature with everyday living. If the opportunity arises, we highly recommend embracing this design approach.
What was the most dramatic transformation in the home?
The opening up of the three sections of the ground floor to connect seamlessly with the central garden and achieve a concept set from the start, of a private outdoor space fully integrated within a household.
