What’s On in Hammersmith April 2022
April 7 – Scandaltown @ the Lyric Hammersmith
Scandaltown, written by Mike Bartlett and directed by Rachel O’Riordan, opens at the Lyric Hammersmith, in Lyric Square. It’s a show set in post-pandemic London, an irreverent satire that takes a wry look at fame, politics and morality… a modern-day restoration comedy. The show runs until May 14.
April 8 – Dr John Cooper Clarke @ Eventim Apollo
The original People’s Poet, John Cooper Clarke, celebrates his autobiography I Wanna Be Yours with an appearance at the Eventim Apollo where he’ll combine poetry readings with gags, mischievous humour and off-the-wall chat.
April 11 – Bad Reputation @ Hammersmith’s Riverside Studios
Poppy Richler is the guest DJ at Next Door Records, 304 Uxbridge Road, with her Rhythm Changes It’s the start of the final week of a provocative exhibition at Hammersmith’s Riverside Studios entitled Bad Reputation. It has been running for four months, but it will be taken down on April 18. It features art by contemporary artists including hand-blown neon designs by Lauren Baker and diamond dust celebrity portraits by screen-printer David Studwell, as well as lesser-known urban artists. Entry free. The studios are in Queen Caroline Street, W6.
April 12 – Love Music @ AgeUK Hammersmith and Fulham
Whether you like classical, pop, rock ’n’ roll or opera, choose – and share – your favourite music with others at the Love Music social event from 2-3.30pm every Tuesday at AgeUK’s H&F building at 105 Greyhound Road, W6. It’s free, and you can either book ahead on 020 7386 9085 or simply turn up.
April 14 – Lunch @ River Café
It’s the last date to book a discounted set lunch from the spring menu at the famed River Café. You could start with chargrilled squid, follow that with fresh pasta and artichokes, then tuck into wild seabass roasted with olives. River Cafe is a 35-year-old riverside eatery in Rainville Road, W6. 020 7386 4200.
April 23 – The Story Game @ Lyric Studio
A great show for children aged six and upwards arrives at the Lyric Studio in Hammersmith – Andrew Barnett Jones presenting The Story Game. The beauty of it is, no one knows where the story is going. For an hour, a handful of words and a roll of the dice will combine with Jones’s imagination to create a madcap yarn.
April 23 – The Whole Nine Yarns @ Irish Cultural Centre
Your last chance to see Fair Play at the Bush Theatre at 7 Uxbridge Road, with two performances – a The Whole Nine Yarns is a night of poetry and comedy with Owen O’Neill at the Irish Cultural Centre in the heart of Hammersmith. O’Neill has performed in Ireland, Scotland and in New York, and has published three poetry books. He adapted The Shawshank Redemption for the stage. The show starts at 8pm in the centre in Blacks Road.
April 23 – Hancock’s Half Hour @ Riverside Studios
If you’re a fan of Tony Hancock’s timeless comedy, there’s a triple bill of Hancock’s Half Hour on the big screen at Riverside Studios, Queen Caroline Street, W6… including the Twelve Angry Men episode from 1959. Linked to the screening at 2pm (tickets £10, booked via riversidestudios.co.uk) is a small exhibition of Hancock memorabilia including original scripts and props.
April 30 – Abba Orchestral evening @ Eventim Apollo
Mamma Mia, what’s this? The Eventim Apollo is hosting an Abba Orchestral evening, featuring the National Philharmonic Concert Orchestra playing a series of hits by the band… including orchestral versions of tracks from the Voyage album. Vocalists Carla Winters and Miranda Richards not only sing but show off some memorable costumes. 8pm. Tickets (visit eventim.co.uk) from £35.
April 30 – Exhibition @ Emery Walker’s House
A last chance to enjoy a small exhibition about the private press movement at Emery Walker’s House, the home of Arts & Crafts, at 7 Hammersmith Terrace, W6. The modest show closes in May. You can take an hour-and-a-half tour (£15) by booking via emerywalker.org.uk
What’s On in Hammersmith May 2022
May 1 – Daoiri Farrell @ Irish Cultural Centre
Daoiri Farrell, the Dublin-born bouzouki player, will fill the Irish Cultural Centre with the sounds of Irish folk music from 7.30pm. Tickets from irishculturalcentre.co.uk are £15 (£13 concs) and – for the record – his first name is pronounced ‘Derry’. The centre is in Blacks Road, by Hammersmith Broadway.
May 6 – Jam Session @ Jazz Cafe POSK
A new and exciting evening of monthly jazz jam sessions with an emphasis on modern jazz held at the Polish Social and Cultural Association POSK, 238-246 King Street. An opportunity for like-minded musicians to catch-up, socialize and, of course, perform on stage with the rhythm section being led by Tomasz Zyrmont.
May 6 – Groovy Comedy @ The Grove Bar
Run weekly this show by the Groovie Comedy team offers a unique mix of talent and performance and will delight those in attendance. Buy tickets online. The Grove Bar & Restaurant, 83 Hammersmith Grove, W6 0NQ
May 14 – The Wind in the Willows @ Lyric Studio
If you love Kenneth Grahame’s classic The Wind in the Willows, you’ll be intrigued to hear the ‘true story’, as told by Ratty and Toad. Puppetry, acting and props combine in a 50-minute children’s show at the Lyric Studio in Hammersmith. Tickets are £8 from the box office (020 8741 6850).
May 15 – Spring BBQ @ Age UK Hammersmith and Fulham
All are welcome to join the Spring BBQ organised by AgeUK Hammersmith and Fulham. A range of stalls including a Name the Teddy stall sponsored by Visiting Angels. There’s fun for all the family and a BBQ and cake sale sponsored by Walfinch Hammersmith and Kensington. The organisers simply ask that those who wish to attend register their interest by calling 020 7386 9085.
May 17 – Petros Singers @ St Peter’s Church
If you sing bass or tenor, you’ll be made most welcome by the Petros Singers, west London’s leading amateur choir, who rehearse every Tuesday in term time between 8pm and 9.45pm at St Peter’s Church in Black Lion Lane, W6. Sit in on a rehearsal, and meet musical director Richard Bannan, then take it from there. The singers give three or four concerts a year. More info at petrossingers.org
May 19 – Dirty Dancing @ Eventim Apollo
Dirty Dancing is in concert, live on stage at the Eventim Apollo in Hammersmith at 7pm, with a film screening accompanied by a band and singers. The organisers promise you ‘the time of your life’. Tickets from £30 via eventim.co.uk
May 26 – Racine’s Britannicus @ The Lyric
Timberlake Wertenbaker’s adaptation of Racine’s Britannicus opens at the Lyric, Hammersmith, looking at power and succession in ancient Rome, but with modern overtones. Atri Banerjee directs, and this new production (approximately 100 minutes) runs until 25 June, with tickets from £10. The box office is on 020 8741 6850.
May 26 – Straight Line Crazy @ Riverside Studios
Straight Line Crazy, a new David Hare play, is being performed live in London… and beamed to the screen at Riverside Studios in Queen Caroline Street, W6. The cast includes Ralph Fiennes, and it tells the story of Robert Moses’ creation of many of New York’s landmark buildings. The screening lasts three hours, it starts at 7pm and tickets are £18 (riversidestudios.co.uk)
What’s On in Hammersmith June 2022
June 4 – Platinum Party in the Park @ Ravenscourt Park
Celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee, there will be a large event organised by Hammersmith and Fulham council held in Ravenscourt Park. Featuring big screens where you can watch the derby and evening concert, street food, craft stalls, games and more this promises to be a fun day out for all ages.
June 5 – Platinum Picnic in the Park @ Ravenscourt Park
If your street isn’t organising its own party, or you simply can’t choose which invite to RSVP to, why not gather everyone together and join in at Ravenscourt Park. Tables will be given out on a first come first served basis, or you are free to bring your own picnic blankets or chairs. Bring your own food or buy something from one of our food stands, and enjoy the Jubilee in style.
June 7 – Love (to) Bits @ Barons Court Theatre
Sticking with the Bush Theatre’s current sporting theme, Red Pitch has its opening night (it runs until Opening night of Love (to) Bits by Ioana Goga at the intimate basement Barons Court Theatre – a dramatic comedy that draws on Bridget Jones and Fleabag. The show runs until 25 June at the space beneath the Curtains Up gastropub, 28a Comeragh Road. Tickets from £15 at baronscourttheatre.com
June 11 – 3 hour Bachata Dance Intensive Workshop @ Hammersmith Salsa & Bachata Club
Suitable for those of all levels, this workshop offer an intensive program that promises to get attendees dancing much more confidently. Tickets can be booked online. The workshop will be held at the Hammersmith Salsa & Bachata Club, 11 Rutland Grove, Hammersmith, W6 9DH
June 17 – Artists at Home
From 17 to the 19 June Artists as Home, a large group of talented individuals who all reside in West London will run their open studio weekend where members of the public can visit each artist’s studio, which for most is within their own homes. June 23 – Elvis Costello and the Imposters @ Eventim Apollo
Elvis Costello and the Imposters play the Eventim Apollo, with doors opening at 7 pm at the famous Hammersmith venue. It’s the final show of a UK tour, with Ian Prowse as the support act. Although the tour follows the release of the LP The Boy Named If, you can be sure that Watching The Detectives and Oliver’s Army will feature too. From £52.50 via eventim.co.uk
June 25 – Joe Lycett @ Eventim Apollo
Comedian Joe Lycett’s wickedly inappropriate humour is on show on stage at Hammersmith’s Eventim Apollo tonight and tomorrow night with the More, More, More tour. It starts at 7.30pm, and tickets are available from £35 via the box office at eventim.co.uk
June 29 – One World: Wealth of the Common People @ The Lyric
The world’s first disability-inclusive professional dance company, the Amici Dance Theatre, presents One World: Wealth of the Common People at the Lyric, Hammersmith. Choreographed by Wolfgang Stange, it’s an exploration of unity and tolerance in a world where refugee crises are, sadly, commonplace. Tickets from £14 via the Lyric box office on 020 8741 6850.
